Jubilee Pool Celebrates 85 Years

Jubilee Pool celebrates its 85th birthday on 31st May 2020.  Instead of throwing a party at the pool to celebrate its 85th birthday the team at Jubilee Pool ran an online t-shirt design competition to mark the occasion.  Entrants were asked to create a design which celebrated the pools birthday with the only specifications being their design had to include a swimmer and a reference to the anniversary.

Dozens of beautiful, creative designs were submitted by people of all ages, the youngest entrant being just 7 years old! The winning design was selected by the Pool’s Chair of Directors (Susan Stuart), Interim Chief Operating Officer (Nicola Murdoch) and the Jubilee Pool Stories Project Team.

The decision was unanimous, with Ella Tattersall’s design selected as the winning entry.  Ella, 19,  said ‘I am so happy to have won the Jubilee Pool competition as I have grown up at the pool which makes it one of my favourite places as it holds some of my best childhood summer memories. The swimmer in the image is also very special as she is inspired by Julia Rescorla who was an inspiring local swimming teacher that dedicated her life to helping people feel safe in the water and encouraging them to love it as much as she did’.

Ella’s design will be printed onto special commemorative t-shirts which can be purchased via Jubilee Pool’s website from early June.  Jubilee Pool £2 from every t-shirt sale to the CTIPA Food Bank in Penzance.

In the run up to their anniversary Jubilee Pool has been sharing some of the wonderful photographs and films that have been collected and digitised by the Jubilee Pool Stories Project.  The project has created an extensive online archive which currently includes hundreds of photos spanning from pre-Jubilee Pool to present day. The project is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, The Tanner Trust and Falmouth University.  View the archive here.

Susan Stuart, Chair of Directors said ‘It’s sad that we can’t celebrate on our lovely lido’s actual birthday but rest assured when we’re able to, we will have a great birthday bash and an official celebration of the new geothermal pool’.

Nicola Murdoch, Interim Chief Operating Officer at Jubilee Pool said ‘we hope to open at some stage this year, albeit with limited capacity, but we are awaiting further detailed government guidance regarding swimming pools before we are able to announce a timeline for this.  Keep checking our website and social media for updates’.
